Note that we need to shutdown our guest OS: In the network settings for the virtual machine, set up adapters via VirtualBox Manager. In main Preferences of Virtualbox, under Network, add the Host-only network vboxnet0. Instead, a virtual network interface (similar to a loopback interface) is created on the host, providing connectivity among virtual machines and the host. This can be used to create a network containing the host and a set of virtual machines, without the need for the host's physical network interface. The Host-only network is a virtual network provided by VirtualBox that is visible only to the Host OS and its virtual machines. To enable static IP addresses on our VirtualBox VMs, we'll first need to setup a Host-only network. Our Ubuntu will be able to reach the Internet and see other Virtualbox machines as well.

The surprise inclusion of Compiz (although it is not enabled by default) is also to help provide tear free video for those with graphics hardware capable of running Compiz. The advantage of the newer Linux kernel is that it resolves most of the screen tearing issues some people experienced in Ubuntu MATE 14.04.1. So we did, most notably LibreOffice 4.4.1.2. The upside of maintaining an unofficial Ubuntu derivative is that we can roll out new features and package updates. These issues are not specific to Ubuntu MATE. During our testing we found many issues with the Xorg HWE stack, such as Virtualbox Guest Additions and the Ubuntu SDK not being compatible. It is important to state clearly that Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 is not an official Ubuntu flavour! We have only integrated the Linux 3.16 kernel, but not the updated Xorg stack. This release fixes a few issues that were present in 14.04.1, adds some new features and updates some packages.
